radish seedlings

radish seedlings, originally uploaded by Margo and George.

Voila! the seedlings I thinned - why waste good seedlings? See the baby radish roots?

I'm confused though... Why not let the radishes grow? Can the leaves be eaten?

That's a good question! Sorry to confuse: yes, when you plant rows of seeds, you have to generally assume that a certain number of them won't germinate, or will get eaten by birds, slugs, beetles, etc. or otherwise mysteriously don't come up. Notice the mystery gap in a couple of my rows? It's a mystery. But the rest of the row needs thinning so that the little "green babies" as Ilex cutely puts it - so that the seedlings don't have to compete with one another for nutrients, water, space to grow. So, since radish tops are also edible, I simply thinned judiciously and ate the thinnings! Unfortunately, you cant' do that will all plants, just some. *sigh* but I felt somehow very virtuous and yet atavistic too. :P
